q
Do I need a special paint to paint my radiator?
|
| a
Not necessarily. Most decorators use oil based eggshell or gloss,
these products will withstand the heat. |
| |
q
Can I paint my newly plastered walls?
|
| a
Yes. Leave the wall to dry for a few days, then apply one thinned
coat (10-20% water)of contract emulsion,
followed by a further 1-2 full coats. Contract
emulsion has no or very little vinyl content, so allows the wall to
breathe(lets any trapped moisture out of the wall without damaging
the paint surface.) |
| |
q Can
I paint over my water marked / nicotine stained ceiling?
|
| a Yes,
firstly you must prime the ceiling with a primer such as Seal-lock
or Odourless(see our product list).
The ceiling can then be re-coated with
an emulsion paint or left as the primer is naturally a flat white
finish. |
| |
| q Can
I paint over my melamine kitchen units and ceramic tiles? |
| a Yes,
you must use a primer such as ESP (easy surface preparation) first.
This product is clear and applied with a cloth, leave for 5 minutes,
wipe off excess and the surface is ready
to paint in 90 minutes.(Usually with
2 x coats of oil based eggshell paint.) |
| |
| q I
don't like the smell of gloss paint, is there a paint that doesn't
smell? |
| a Acrylic
gloss paints have been around for a few years now, they have very
little odour but they are not a full gloss like an oil based finish.
A good replacement is the Advanced Technology
gloss, not featured on the web site, but
this product is without doubt the best alternative, a full gloss
finish, virtually no odour, thinnable with water and quick drying.
This product is only available in brilliant
white. |
| |
| q My
bathroom ceiling has mould growing on it, what can I do? |
| a Apply
a good fungicidal solution directly onto the areas of mould. This
product will kill the spores and reduce
the risk of mould growing back. When
the wall is thoroughly dry, apply 1-2 coats of a fungicidal vinyl
silk emulsion. |
| |
| q Can
I paint my walls and woodwork with an emulsion paint? |
| a You
can do this, however, this is not good painting practise and we would
recommend that Acrylic eggshell is used as an alternative. Acrylic
eggshell is a harder wearing product and will withstand bumps and
knocks particularly on woodwork. |
| |
| q What
is the difference between vinyl silk and vinyl matt? |
| a Vinyl
silk has a higher sheen level which makes it more durable and easier
to wash down. Vinyl matt, however, has better obliteration properties
and has a flatter finish. Both products are water based, so can
be thinned and cleaned up with water. |
| |
| q Why
is my border peeling off my wallpaper? |
| a Most
wallpapers of today have a vinyl finish to them and so you must use
a heavy duty adhesive such as border and overlap. Do not try and use
standard wallpaper paste. |
| |
| q My
walls are powdery to touch and I want to repaint them, what
can I use? |
| a Stabilising
solutions are the most common primers to use. These products
stick powdery products back onto the wall, however you must follow
the preparation codes set out by the manufacturer. We would recommend
the EB.(emulsa bond) which is featured on this site. use 1 part
EB to 4 parts water based paint, mix together and use this as your
first coat, 1-2 full coats should finish
the job nicely. |
| |
| q We
have just moved into our new home, and all the white gloss areas
are yellow with nicotine, I only want to use one coat, what's
you advice?. |
| a The
short answer is no!, there is nothing that I know of in a gloss finish
that will cover severe nicotine in one
coat. 2 coats, probably! If you use the
Insl-x odourless primer, followed by a standard gloss finish, this
will block out all your nasty stains
without using any sandpaper! |
| |
| q I
am about to paint my house outside walls, what are the best products
that you sell? |
| a The
best product for outside wall surfaces at this time of year is Pliolite
based masonry paint. I must stress that
it is not recommended to paint outside
at this time of year as the moisture that is in the atmosphere and
probably in your walls will not allow the paint to perform properly
and could effect drying times. However.....Pliolite
is the best to use at this moment in
time because it is shower proof in 20 minutes! |
| |
| q I
want to repaper a bedroom, but it has Chipwood wallpaper on the
walls, what's the quickest way to get it off. |
| a Use
a steam stripper! Woodchip is a nightmare to get off the wall,it will
take you hours of hard work to remove
it all manually, We can hire industrial
steam strippers at £10.00 if you are near by, otherwise a good decorators
merchant will hire you one. |
| |
| q I
have got damp salty looking patches on my walls, can I do anything
to stop it other than spend thousands on damp courses? |
| a The
cheapest way to cover this is to buy a, "Contract Emulsion", It has
no vinyl in it and so allows the wall
to breathe.(Allows the moisture and salts
to come out of the wall without damaging the paint). This is not a
cure! eventually, you may see signs
of the problem re occurring but not for
a long time. The good news is the price, £8.21 for brilliant white
5 Ltr. Or £9.39 for a colour. Alternatively,
use a damp proof paint or a cellar paint
at Apr.. £30.00 for 5 ltrs. |
| |
| q I
have just bought an old house, and it needs a lot of work. There seems
to be a lot of peeling paint, mainly gloss. How can I fix this? |
| a The
paint is peeling because of poor preparation. This means some lazy
so and so couldn't be bothered to sand
down any area's. Sand well down until
you can't peel anymore paint off, then use an undercoat and then
a gloss or eggshell to finish. Alternatively.....Burn paint off back
to bare wood, prime, undercoat and finish
with gloss or eggshell. |
| |
| q I
have a lot of cracked plaster, please could you tell me how I can
wallpaper over this. |
| a If
the plaster is'nt new....then first use a good quality lining paper
ie grade 1000, hung horizontally on
the wall. |
